Applegate River Watershed Forest Simulation Project

APPLEGATE RIVER WATERSHED FOREST SIMULATION PROJECT Phone conversation w/ Norm Johnson, November 26 1997, 8:00-8:30 AM

Notes taken by Todd Kesterson, Applegate River Watershed Council ph: 899-9982 (Watershed Council Office) fax: 899-1256 E-mail: arwc@mind.net Jim Agee had meeting w/ Bobcat from Headwaters. Norm feels no need for Jim to meet w/ Headwaters again until after Christmas (when fire modeling paper is ready). Funding for Bernie Bahro is in works (Bahro will help w/ fire modeling). Group probably won't be working on model any more until December. Still loose ends w/ Jim Sedell due to his schedule, but Norm hopes to still have him involved in project. Model will not be in prototype stage until spring. Model now incorporates three types of disturbance: fire, wind, insects. This will be much more complex than the Sierra model, but will take longer to complete. Norm feels confident w/ goals, but still wants my input and any new input from community that I can gather. He doesn't want people to feel left out, but he feels enough time has been spent rehashing current goals. Norm can come down here whenever we really need him. Based on public input, project was modified in the following ways: Goals were changed Underlying assumptions are being looked at (fire modeling paper, etc.) Model is being reworked significantly (wind, insects) Norm is going to be chairing committee for USDA on forest mgmt. His schedule will be busy, but this project is still a priority for him.
