Applegate River Watershed Forest Simulation Project conference call 3-6-98 11:45 am.

Present: Norm Johnson, Chris Maguire, Jim Agee, Todd Kesterson Notes taken by Todd Kesterson, Applegate River Watershed Council ph: 899-9982 (Watershed Council Office) fax: 899-1256 E-mail: arwc@mind.net Measures of goal attainment: How will we know when we get there? Norm will bring ideas to meeting. Wildlife: We can use Brown's book for general habitat based on veg. type. We don't have numbers for many species. We can look at elements such as snags, cliffs, etc. We can look at landscape features such as contiguous habitat. Sessions's work in Umpqua on T&E species may be able to be used, if available. Start w/ general habitat type then work to individual species. Abundance of species will have to be looked at in each habitat cell. ** Get hold of agency folks, partnership, community regarding specific wildlife goals. Chris has not had any feedback directly from them on goals. Jim Sedell has recommended Lois (last name unclear) to deal wi/ fish issue. Fire: How to measure? We can't look at "# of houses saved". We will look at type and severity of wildfire. Vegetation character will be referenced. Total # acres burned and veg. kill will be calculated to evaluate fire scenarios. Model may be able to look at long term landscape condition & how we are moving toward or away from fire hazard. Ellen (not in conversation) will use similar approach to track insect outbreak based on stand condition. Goals: At committee of scientists meeting, Applegate Partnership goals mentioned were: Ecological, Economic, Aesthetic Aesthetics is a key goal in community. I discussed shaded fuel break/ DFPZ (Defensible Fuel Profile Zone) issue and BLM field trip that I attended for the Appleseed Project. ** Community meeting on 3-12 will be divided between measurement of goal attainment and veg. questions (talk to Norm more about this...) Jim sent e-mail on successional pathways. He'll resend. Jim will likely be down for a day to look at successional pathways. Tom Adset should be able to able to answer many questions on successional pathways at 9 AM Norm meeting . Jim is trying to locate appropriate geology map.
