FEC Recommended COF Reorganization Models

On November 13, the Forestry Executive Committee reviewed the 5 preliminary reorganization models developed by the Reorganization Committee, and the two options provided by the CFAC. Based on faculty, staff and student feedback the FEC decided to continue considering variations of Model 2 Prime and Model 3 Prime. There was also sufficient feedback to propose additional review of a two department model. The three models now available for additional review and discussion are below:

In considering these models, the FEC decided that these goals should be the most important factors in any final decision.

Reorganization Critera:

  1. Reduce Administrative Costs
  2. Protect Academic Programs (keeping in tact and preserve accreditation)
  3. Facilitate Development Campaign
  4. Manageable Administrative Units
  5. Undergraduate Degree Program in Each Unit
  6. Facilitates Collaboration/Multi-disciplinary Efforts

The FEC invites your feedback on these options. Please use the automated response at the feedback form, or you may contact the Dean directly via email or an office appointment. All feedback is due by December 7 at 5 PM.

The following tables provide a summary view of the above Models:

Model 2: Resource to User Continuum Approach

  • Is a creative way of thinking about units in CoF.
  • Creates unconventional grouping of the forest as an end use (recreation) and wood and fiber as an end use (wood products).
  • Builds on CoF strength in understanding and managing forests on-the-ground:
    • Collaborative opportunities in "the resource" dept.
    • Retains strong sense of identity in the "transition" dept focused on traditional forest engineering (roads and extraction).

Model 3 Prime: Type of Use Approach (modified)

Focus on Primary Use (with broader management focus)
  • Retains advantages and disadvantages of Model 3
  • EXCEPT allows greater opportunity for broader view of mission in "active mgmt" and "ecosystem services" depts.
