Hedgerow intercropping, often called alley cropping, is a much-researched
agroforestry technology in the tropics. Several tree/shrub species have been tried as
hedgerow species with different agricultural crops in a number of locations. The picture
shows an alley cropping experiment with Leucaena leucocephala, pruned close to the
ground, as the hedgerow species and maize (Zea mays) as the crop, in Kenya.
