Abstract:

African savannas provide habitat for the greatest diversity of wildlife of any ecosystem on earth. The mixture of trees and grasses, and the patchy nature of the landscape define savanna systems. Many interlinked controlling factors contribute to the composition and structure of the landscape. Such drivers include soil type, climate, herbivore density, anthropogenic land use and wild-fire frequency. This poster examines preliminary analyses of changes in southern African savanna vegetation. Detection of change is achieved through a combined approach that uses both field data and remote sensing. Additionally, future research to address changes in landscape fragmentation is proposed.
