Using spatially-explicit models and algorithms to site marine protected areas is becoming more popular. However, for many areas there is a paucity of meaningful data available for creating layers to include in the models. This study uses MARXAN, a spatially-explicit strategic conservation-planning program specifically designed to site MPAs; results of two potential marine protected areas are presented. Marxan was applied to Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in Alaska. Glacier Bay has a long history of research in the park and dozens of high-quality data layers are available for inclusion in the MARXAN program. On the other hand, MARXAN was run for the Arctic Ocean, where data is patchy and few meaningful data sets cover the entire area of interest. A comparison of the results shows (i) sensitivity of the model outcomes, and (ii) the importance of collecting comprehensive and meaningful data freely available to the community. |
