Simple Number Formatting

Objective: To format a range of numbers.

Instructions: You will use the Number tab in the Format Cells dialogue box.

Comments: Remember that numbers can have text formatting such as font, style, colour and alignment applied to them as well as special number formats.

Activity 6.1 Select the range B7:E10 by clicking the mouse in cell B7, holding down the mouse button and dragging the mouse diagonally across the sheet to cell E10, then releasing the mouse button. The rectangular of cells B7:E10 should be highlighted black on white background.

Activity 6.2 Select the Cells... command from the Format menu and the Number tab from the Format Cells dialogue box. The Number Format dialogue tab should appear.

By default the dialogue box will show you all the preset formats available in Excel. To make life easier these have been grouped into categories so that you need only view the ones relevant to you. The meaning of the symbols is explained in the next section.

Activity 6.3 Click on the word Currency at the bottom of the Category list box. The list of formats in the Format Codes box changes to display just four.

Activity 6.4 Select the first highlighted format $#,##0_);($#,##0) by clicking <OK>. The dialogue box will disappear and your table should now look like that below:
