Simple Text Formatting<

Objective: To format text on the spreadsheet.

Instructions: You will be use the Format menu for nearly all of the exercises in this workbook. In this exercise you will use the Font command.

Comment: Formatting text is virtually the same in every Windows application. It is important to remember that in Excel a format applies to a whole cell - you cannot format the individual characters of a cell.

Activity 3.1 In the example worksheet select cell A1 containing the title "Sales for Vino plc". Select the Cells command from the Format menu. The Format Cells dialogue box should appear as shown below:

Activity 3.2 The box gives the entire list of options for formatting text within cells. Click on the Font tab at the top of the box.

Activity 3.3 This box gives a complete set of options for formatting the text. For each font you can define it to be regular (normal), bold, italic or bold italic. You can also define the size, the underlining and the colour of the font. Whatever formatting you apply to the text you will see the result in the Preview box.

Select the Bookman Old Style font by scrolling down the box until the title "Bookman Old Style" appears. Click on it.

Select Bold Italics from the Font Style box.

Select size 16 by scrolling down the box until the number 16 appears. Click on it.

Finally make the colour red by clicking on the down arrow button to reveal a colour palette. Click on the box with the colour Red inside.

When you have finished click the <OK> button.
