When a browser such as Netscape encounters a sound file, image file, or video file, it can hand off the job of displaying or playing these to a helper application. The helper application is specified in your browser's preferences and is launched when a particular file is encountered. Netscape can show image files in the GIF and JPEG format in-line. In-line images are images that are displayed inside your browser without the need for a helper application. Since you may encounter some graphics files not supported by your browser, you can use some of the following helper applications. Helper applications are also nice if you would like to continue to view an image even though you have changed URLs from the original source.
