From a Netscape browser window you can get to Netscape Messenger by clicking on the mail icon (2nd from the left) in the collection of 5 icons in the lower righthand corner of the window. You can also open Messenger by choosing Communicator | Messenger or using the keyboard shortcut [Ctrl] 2

After opening Messenger, a window will appear, offering several different toolbars and views. Explore the different options in the View menu. It is suggested you use the options, View | Show Message Toolbar, Message, and Folders.

You may resize the folder pane and message pane by placing your mouse pointer on the vertical or horizontal bar that separates them. When it turns into a "" Click and Drag left or right or up or down to resize.

Other options can be set in Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups | Window Settings

Composing a Message

Addressing -- You have a couple options. (Multiple addresses can be separated by commas.)
  1. Enter the complete e-mail address
  2. Enter a nickname of an address in your Personal Address Book
  3. Enter the first name or last name and Messenger will attempt to resolve the address when you move your cursor out of the address field.
    • Address Resolution -- You'll be presented with a list of matches found in your personal address book and the OSU campus address book depending on how you set options when you set up Netscape Messenger.
You'll want to add the OSU Campus Address Book as one of your address directories to search.
      1. Go to the Address Book -- Communicator | Address Book
      2. File | New Directory
      3. Description: OSU Campus Directory
        LDAP Server: ldap.orst.edu
      4. Click OK
      5. You may also want to right-click on the other directories already installed and Delete them so they aren't searched with each message you address.
      6. You'll also want the campus directory to be searched by default
        Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups | Addressing
Set the check box "Directory Server" and set the OSU Campus Directory in the drop down.
Likely you will also want to set the check box for "If there is only one match in your personal address books"
Message Text -- Note that the option to check Spelling appears in the Toolbar.

Sending the Message -- Click Send or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-Enter.

Choosing File | Save while editing a message will save a copy of the message to the folder specified in Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups | Copies and Folders.

A copy of all messages you send will be automatically saved to the folder specified in Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups | Copies and Folders.

Receiving Messages, Reading, Replying, and Forwarding

You will be notified with a sound and a small envelope will appear next to the time in the lower right-hand corner of your taskbar when a new message arrives.

Use the Toolbar items to Reply, Reply All, or Forward the currently selected message in your Inbox or the message you're currently viewing.

Deleting Messages

There are many ways to delete a message.
  1. To delete a message you are currently reading, click the Delete item on the toolbar.

  2. To delete a message from the Inbox or any other folder, right-click on the message and choose the Delete Message option.

  3. Select the message by clicking on the message in a list of a folder's messages and then click the Delete item in the toolbar or press the Delete key.
Deleted messages are moved to the Trash folder of Local Mail and are not really gone until you choose File | Empty Trash on Local Mail.

Creating and Using Folders

Creating a Folder
  1. In your Folder List you must select the folder that will CONTAIN the folder you are about to create.
  2. Right-click on the folder where you want to hang the new folder.
  3. Choose New Subfolder... or New Folder...
  4. Type in the name of your new folder and Click OK.
  5. Your folder will now be placed alphabetically in the folder list.

Moving Messages Between Folders
There are many ways to move messages to folders but with the Folder List in your view you can use the usual Drag and Drop techniques to move messages.

Sending and Receiving Attachments

Sending an Attachment
While composing a message click Attach on the toolbar and choose File. Browse to a file you'd like to attach to the current message. The file will be listed at the paperclip tab in the address section of your message.

Various forms of encoding/wrapping can be used with attachments. cc:Mail used an old form called UUEncode. Most mailers now handle MIME attachments. For compatibility when working with people on other mail systems you may want to specify an attachment type. While composing a message go to the Message Sending Options tab of the address section of your message.

Viewing an Attachment
If you see a paperclip included with the icon in the subject area of a message, someone has inserted a file such as a Word document into the e-mail message.

View the message and you will see each of the attachments listed at the end of the message. When you click on each attachment you'll be presented with options to open or save the attachment. Remember that opening any attachment is how viruses are transmitted.

Personal Address Book

You access your locally stored Personal Address Book by choosing Communicator | Address Book, or the keyboard shortcut [Ctrl] 2.

You can enter individuals in your address book directly using the New Card item in the toolbar. Also, with a message selected you can choose Message | Add Sender to Address Book.

Use the New List item in the address book toolbar to create a new mailing list. You can reposition the New List window so you can drag and drop addresses from your address book onto the new list you want to create.
