Installing ArcInfo
Like most of the PC software in Forestry, ArcInfo can be install/updated with an auto installer. The installer loads the necessary software on the system and installs an icon for it in the program group or menu. After the initial installation subsequent launches of the application from this icon will perform an automatic check for to make sure the workstation and user portions of the application are installed and up to date. If everything is OK the launcher will simply start the application, otherwise it will automatically perform the necessary installation or upgrade.
If ArcInfo is not loaded on your system, the initial installation on a WinNT system can be done by running the program:
Q:\WIN32\INSTALL\GIS\ARCINFO
You must have administrative rights to install the program. The default install only puts a small part of ArcInfo on the local workstation and the remaining 500Mb are stored on the server. If you have the disk space and would prefer a local copy, this can be accomplished with the command:
Q:\WIN32\INSTALL\GIS\ARCINFO localinstall
The University and the colleges contribute to provide a site license for ArcInfo so the software is provided at no special charge to the users. However, the licenses are regulated with license managers and if you need a truely "private" this can be arranged through helpdesk. For private licenses there is a $30 charge for a hardware key and it will be the users responsibility to update the license file annually. New licenses are only available periodically throughout the year (e.g. Sept/October).
Because of differences in workstation, Windows, and LAN configurations (as well as just plan bugs), sometimes the installations do not work properly. If you encounter problems with the installation that you cannot resolve, please contact the helpdesk.
