Educational Facilities

Corvallis, Oregon is one of the largest forestry research centers in America. Peavy Hall, the OSU forestry building, contains modern classroom, laboratory, and study facilities. An aggressive research program is conducted by the college through its Forest Research Laboratory and by the campus based Forest Sciences Laboratory of the U.S. Forest Service. These facilities offer splendid educational and employment opportunities for superior students.

The college makes extensive use of various public and private forestry programs and facilities for student benefit. Numerous field trips to forest and wood processing plant operations, recreation facilities, and research areas enable students to observe contemporary problems and practices. Classes use the nearby college forests for daily field instruction. In addition to these 11,000 acres in the McDonald and Dunn Forests, the college manages other forests in Benton and Columbia counties for education and research. A Forest Products Collection contains approximately 2,500 species of wood, primarily from North and South America, Southeast Asia, and Africa.

In addition to office, laboratory, and instructional facilities, departments also have access to key College-wide facilities such as the Lundeen Communications Laboratory, the Self-Learning Center, the Forestry Media Center, the Instructional Computing Laboratories, the Field Equipment and Instrument Room, the Cooperative Chemical Analytical Laboratory, the Continuing Education Office, the FRL editing and publications service, the FRL shop, and the College Research Forests, as well as facilities associated with other departments and institutions on campus, and lands of cooperating agencies and institutions. We also house the Environmental Remote Sensing Applications Laboratory (ERSAL), the Forest Photogrammetry Research Laboratory (FPRL), Forest Planning Laboratory, the Lee Harris Computer Laboratory, and provide space for scientists affiliated with the National Biological Service.

State-of-the-art equipment ranging from computers to analytical instruments is readily available to facilitate research and educational activities. Excellent secretarial, clerical, and other support services are also available.

The Forest Engineering, Forest Products, and Forest Resources departments are situated in Peavy Hall. The Forest Science department is located in the Forest Sciences Lab, which is adjacent to Peavy Hall. Faculty, staff, and graduate students are housed in offices and laboratories on all three floors in Peavy Hall and the Forest Sciences Lab.
