Highlights
Highlights 1994-1995
- TGERC begins operation, adds seven new members. After several rounds of review, Memorandum of Agreement, research projects, and budgets for five-year period are developed.
- USDA-APHIS approval of a field test of flowering, transgenic poplars to examine engineered reproductive sterility and glyphosate resistance. The first set of transgenic trees have been planted this year, and more will follow in succeeding years. More than 200 transgenic lines have been planted.
- Significant improvements to cottonwood gene-transfer efficiency and transgene expression. Work focused on matrix-attachment sequences (MARs) and optimization of cocultivation, selection, and regeneration procedures.
- Demonstration of high levels of glyphosate resistance in transgenic poplars based on greenhouse tests. One field test of transgenics has already been planted, and tests of alternative constructs and transgenic cottonwoods are underway. A manuscript intended to enhance both professional and public understanding of risks and benefits was submitted to the Journal of Forestry.
