  • MOST RECENT FIELD PROTOCOL CHANGES - UPDATED 9/03

(see 2003 Field Manual for exact procedures)

    Reductions in work load:

    1. In Type 2 and 3 installations regeneration surveys in years 1 and 2, stop measuring cover by species. Instead, estimate total cover, maximum height of body of cover and list dominant species.
    2. In Type 2 installations, drop identification of crop trees in control plots.
    3. In Type 2 installations, change treatment 11 (plant 1200 tpa and thin to 230 tpa (568 tph) at HLC 30ft. 9.1m)) to treatment 12 .
    4. In Type 2 installations, streamline height tree selection.
    5. In Type 2 installations at year 3 and after, tag and measure only control (the four basic densities) and treated plots (number increases with time).
    6. Several Type 2 installations are not reaching the 15-20ft (4.6-6.1m) HLC requirement for thinning until year 9. Therefore, we can combine the thinning and year 9 measurement into one trip.

    Additions to work load:

    1. In Type 2 installations if thinning and/or pruning does not occurr in a measurement year, record dead trees and measure diameters on all trees in the control plot of the corresponding density as the plots to be thinned and/or pruned.
    2. GPS all reference points (roads, intersections, trees, etc) and plot corners for site documentation and future GIS work.

    Changes in measurement cycle:

    1. Type 1 installations will be measured every three years through age nine, then measured every five years.
    2. Type 2 installations will be measured every three years through age twelve, then measured every five years.
    3. Type 3 installations will be measured every three years through age twelve, then measured every five years.
