Work Experience
Present
Dept. of Forest Science - Oregon State University
Coastal Oregon Productivity Enhancement (COPE) - Newport, OR
Classification: Faculty Research Assistant
- Study and analyze impacts of forest management practices on wildlife in the Oregon Coast Range.
1995
Dept. of Forest Science - Oregon State University
Coastal Oregon Productivity Enhancement (COPE) - Newport, OR
Classification: Biological Technician II
- Live trapping of small mammals in the Oregon coast range related to a White-footed vole project. Used sherman and fitch live-traps
to capture small mammals. Ear-tagged or toe-clipped animals and released. Kept accurate data on species captured and recapture
rates.
- Assisted graduate student in a project concerning effects of different thinning densities on cavity nesting birds in the Tillamook state
forest. Observed and recorded foraging and nesting behavior of cavity nesting birds on tape. Transcribed data to behavioral data
sheets and recorded measurements of foraging substrate variables such as tree height, furrow depth, canopy cover, etc. Worked in
the steep "slashy" environment of recent commercially thinned stands.
- Assisted PHd student with vegetative analysis in relation to changes in abundance and diversity of small mammals and amphibians
caused by different thinning densities in the Tillamook state forest. Learned to identify all herbaceous plants of the Oregon Coast
Range by leaf characteristics. Duties also included analysis of plant associations, canopy and understory cover in one, five and ten
meter plots, and amount, size and class of slash, woody debris and snags.
1994
Bureau of Land Management - Santiam Resource Area - Salem, OR
Classification: Biological Technician: Grade GS-0404-7
- Crew leader of Santiam wildlife crew with supervisory responsibility for three technicians. Responsible for preliminary study and
analysis of differences in abundance and diversity of terrestrial salamanders in managed and unmanaged forests. Wrote Biological
Assessment for FY95 land exchange. Performed preliminary habitat evaluations on 920 acres of federal land proposed for another
exchange. Participated in monitoring of known owl sites and banding of new owls and juveniles. Participated in surveys of bald and
golden eagles, osprey and goshawks. Participated in mist-netting and banding of bats in eastern Oregon.
1990-1993
Bureau of Land Management - Santiam Resource Area - Salem, OR
Classification: Biological Technician: Grade GS-0404-6
- Four years of seasonal work while attending Oregon State University and after graduation. Duties included developing habitat and
stream evaluation forms and implementing surveys on all proposed land exchanges and timber sales. Took the lead on amphibian
surveys of all proposed management actions. Performed riparian evaluations to ensure adequate buffering of streams within timber
sale boundaries. Monitored wildlife tree retention in completed timber sales to ensure compliance with current District guidelines.
Wrote preliminary proposal for a road closure/management plan for the Santiam Resource Area. Gained knowledge of habitat
requirements and ecology of spotted owls and became adept at handling and banding owls. Reported sightings of all special status
species and sharpened birding skills. Wrote year-end reports of all activities I was in charge of. Experience grade rose from GS-3 to
GS-6.
1981-1986
ATT-Bell Laboratories - Naperville, IL
Classification: Senior Technical Associate
- Member of a technical research and development group involved in the design of a digital telephone switching system. Developed
synchronous designs of three Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) chips to provide new capabilities and cost savings to ATT.
Designed circuit packs to accommodate new chip designs. Redesigned units to house circuit packs. Extensive use of computers and
in-house software programs to design and test all chips and circuit packs. Wrote technical descriptions of all designs. Debugged
faulty circuit packs using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers. Worked as a member of a tightly coordinated eight member team to
reduce eight circuit packs to one utilizing ten different VLSI chips. Savings to ATT estimated at $18 million per year. Original idea
of reduction of cabling between circuit pack units provided an additional savings of $1.5 million per year. Worked closely with all
hardware and software groups to achieve goals under extremely tight schedules.
SKILLS, ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND AWARDS
- Honor Roll - 3.5 or better GPA for 6 of the 7 quarters I was enrolled full time at Oregon State University. Work load averaged 16
credits or more per quarter.
- Birding - I have observed and studied birds for more than fifteen years. I keep a computerized database of all sightings and can
identify all birds of the west and midwest by sight and voice.
- Amphibians - I can identify most amphibians in the Pacific Northwest and am familiar with their habitat requirements.
- Small mammals - I can identify most small mammals of the Pacific Northwest and am becoming familiar with their habitat
requirements.
- Flora of the Pacific Northwest - I can identify most plants of the Oregon Coast Range by flower and leaf characteristics and am
becoming familiar with plant/habitat associations.
- National Appreciation Award - USDI-Bureau of Land Management-1000 volunteer hours-1991. This was for the service
volunteered at Fishermen's Bend Recreation Site near Mill City, OR.
- Exceptional Contribution Award - ATT Bell Laboratories-1985. This award was presented as a result of the custom digital chip
design I was involved with while working as a member of a research and development team.
- Computer Science - I have taken 29 credits of computer science courses at Oregon State University and the University of
Wisconsin. I have Pascal programming experience, GIS experience, and used in-house computer programs at ATT Bell
Laboratories to simulate and test all digital designs. I am also familiar with WordPerfect, Excell, SAS and DBASE IV.
- Highest GPA - Wisconsin School of Electronics (3.68/4.00) - 1981. This was a 96 week, 25 hour per week intensive course dealing
with all aspects of electronics.
- Backpacking - I spent two summers in 1986 and 1987 backpacking around the western United States and British Columbia
familiarizing myself with the ecosystems of the Pacific Northwest. I continue to spend as much time as possible in the wilderness
areas of the west.
