Wood-Based Composite Science - (Online Short Courses)

Registration for the following (first four) courses of the 19-course series begins March 11, 2009.

The new 19-course Wood-Based Composite Science Short Course Series provides career professionals with a fundamental knowledge of wood as an engineering material in the manufacture of wood-based composites. Students who complete courses from the series may be eligible for a Certificate of Mastery and will be able to improve manufacturing efficiency and product performance, troubleshoot processing problems and enhance their value to their employer.

This course provides basic technical information, up-to-date techniques, and a learning opportunity for people involved in veneer, plywood and laminated-veneer lumber (LVL) manufacturing. Program topics range from raw material through green and dry veneer to final panel production and marketing. Speakers cover softwood and hardwood plywood made from western, southern, and imported species. The program is designed for production supervisors, foremen, quality control personnel, and middle management. Offered in cooperation with producers, suppliers and other professionals. An industry standard for over 30 years!

Northeast Utility Pole Conference

The program is geared toward electric utility engineers, operations and purchasing personnel who want to learn more about utility pole materials. All sessions will be held at the Regency Hotel in Binghamton, New York. Maps will be emailed to all registered participants.

How to Dry Lumber for Quality & Profit

The purpose of this course is to provide a basic understanding of wood and how to dry it. Practical, up-to-date information will be provided on wood properties and how wood dries. You’ll learn how both steam-heated and dehumidification kilns are made, operated and maintained, and how to create and modify kiln schedules for different species. Drying to meet the European quality standards and heat treating standards will also be discussed.
