HTML

HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language and is the universal standard for web page development. It consists of a collection of 'tags' which help browsers display pages with the desired formatting. While there are many WYSIWYG editors available for web page creation which will create generate tags for you, being familiar with HTML can be very helpful.

You can examine the source of any HTML document you can find in a browser. Using Firefox, for example, click on the 'View' menu and then click on 'Page Source'. This opens a new window from which you can copy, save, and edit in a text document.

Dreamweaver MX includes an O'Reilly HTML reference in the reference window (Window >> References). This does a good job of describing what each tag does.

There are also many tutorials available on the web. Tutorials recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium are probably the safest, since older tutorials may contain references to deprecated tags which were used in older versions of HTML and have since been replaced with newer methods:

Basic and Advanced HTML courses are taught annually in the College and are highly recommended. Upcoming courses are posted on the Helpdesk Training Schedule
