These Deans Guided the School's Progress...

George W. Peavy: (1869-1951) First Dean of the School, 1910-1940; also President of OSU, 1934-1940. A dynamic personality. Raised and educated in Michigan, he came West with the Forest Service in 1904. After thirty years at OSU and as a member of the Oregon Board of Forestry, he retired but didn't slow down. He was elected as Mayor of Corvallis, District Governor of Rotary International and appointed as State Coordinator of Civilian Defense during World War II. At OSU, one of his major projects was the promotion of the School Forests, now the Peavy Arboretum and the McDonald Forest.

Earl G. Mason: (1897-1952) Assistant and Acting Dean for six years, 1936-1942. He was born in Kansas, but lived in his early years at Salem, Oregon. A graduate of OSU and a member of the forestry staff for twenty-six years. Received his graduate degrees from Yale University and the University of Oregon. He was active in the formation of the Forestry Club, the Annual Cruise (the school yearbook) and Xi Sigma Pi, National Forestry honorary. He retired in 1946, due to illness.

Paul M. Dunn: (1898-1988) Dean of the School from 1942 to 1955. A native of South Dakota, he received his Forestry Training at Iowa State University. After five years in State Forestry in Missouri, and eleven years at Utah State University -- Dean from 1938 to 1942 -- he came to OSU in the early WWII years. Was first Director of the OSU Forest Products Laboratory and later the OSU Forest Experiment Station. Active in promoting Forest Industry relationships and Cooperative Research. He was instrumental in acquiring the 6000 acres of forest land from the Camp Adair tract, now named the Dunn Forest. Resigned in 1955 to join St. Regis Paper Company. Returned in 1968 and then held a Courtesy Professorship at OSU.

Walter F. McCulloch: (1905-1973) Acting Dean from 1952-1953 and Dean from 1955 to 1966. A native of British Columbia, Canada and educated at the University of B.C.; University of Washington, State University of New York, University of Southern California and Oregon. On the forestry staff at Syracuse and Michigan State. At OSU from 1937; but during WWII, he served as Assistant State Forester of Oregon, rejoining the school staff in 1945. A dedicated forester with wide experience; he initiated the OSU programs of Student Personnel and the Self-learning Center, both nationally recognized. Interested in photography and an active writer; especially noted for his book "Woods Words".

Carl H. Stoltenberg: (1924-2002) Dean of the School and Director of Oregon Forest Research Laboratory from 1967 to 1990. Raised in California and earned his forestry degrees at the University of California and Minnesota. A member of the forestry staff at Minnesota, Duke and Iowa State, where he was Head of the Department, prior to joining Oregon State University. Had an active interest in Forest Research, serving with the Forest Service in the South, the Northeast and in Washington, D.C. In 1965, he was invited by the Federal Republic of Germany to visit their country. He was Chairman of the Oregon Board of Forestry from 1973-2002; member of BLM's O&C Advisory Board from 1967-1977; chairman of the USDA Advisory Committee for State and Private Forestry from 1970-1974; and a member of the USDA Advisory Board of Cooperative Forestry Research, 1961-1966. He was an active writer, and had authored numerous technical papers. Active nationally in Society of American Foresters; held various division and section offices, served on accreditation committee and on SAF Council. He also made numerous appearances in western region as speaker and panel moderator at forest industry meetings.

George W. Brown: (1939-    ) Dean of the School and Director of the Forest Research Laboratory from 1990-2000. 

Prior to being selected as Dean, he served the College of Forestry as Associate Dean for Research, he was the Department Head for the Forest Engineering Department for 13 years. He began his teaching career at Oregon State University in 1966.

Dr. Brown received his B.S. in Forest Management and his M.S. in Watershed Management from Colorado State University. His Ph.D. in Forest Hydrology was received from Oregon State University.

Bart Thielges: (1938-2003) Interim Dean of the School and Director of the Forest Research Laboratory from 2000-2001. 

Prior to being selected as Interim Dean, he served as Interim Dean for International Programs 2003-2003; Professor of Forest Science and Associate Dean, College of Forestry; Associate Director, Oregon Forest Research Laboratory 1990-1999 and 2001-2002; Professor and Chairman, Department of Forestry, University of Kentucky 1977-1990; Principal Research Geneticist and Project Leader, USDA Forest Service 1976-77; Associate Professor, School of Forestry and Wildlife Management, Louisiana State University 1971-76; Assistant Professor, Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center 1967-71; Visiting Professor, University of Oxford, Green College and Oxford Forestry Institute 1983-84; and Visiting Professor, University of Hawaii, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources 2001. He served as a member or chairman in many societies, boards, and committees, and authored numerous research publications.

Dr. Thielges received his B.S. from Southern Illinois University. His Master of Forestry, Master of Philosophy, and Ph.D. were all received from Yale.

Hal Salwasser: Dean of the School and Director of the Forest Research Laboratory beginning in 2001. photo of Dean Hal SalwasserDr. Salwasser is also Director of the Institute for Natural Resources at OSU. 

Prior to joining the faculty of OSU in July 2000, he was Director of the US Forest Service Pacific Southwest Research Station in California (1997-2000), Regional Forester for the Northern Region of the Forest Service in Montana (1995-1997), Boone and Crockett Professor of Wildlife Conservation at The University of Montana (1992-1995), Director of New Perspectives/Ecosystem Management for the US Forest Service in Washington, DC (1990-1992), Deputy Director of Wildlife, Fish and Rare Plants for the US Forest Service in DC (1986-1990), Senior Analyst for Natural Resources, President's Commission on Americans Outdoors (1986), National Wildlife Ecologist for the Forest Service (1982-1985), and Regional Wildlife Ecologist for the Pacific Southwest Region of the Forest Service in California (1979-1982).

Dr. Salwasser received his B.A. in Biology from Fresno State University.  His Ph.D. in Wildland Resource Science was received from The University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Salwasser has published more than 70 professional papers and book chapters, and co-edited 2 books on Natural Resource issues. He was President of The Wildlife Society 1993-94, and is a Fellow of the Society of American Foresters. He serves on the Board of Directors of the World Forestry Center, the National Commission for Science in Sustainable Forestry, the Conservation Education Committee of the Oregon Garden, and the Board of Directors of the Oregon Forest Resources Institute. He chairs the Conservation Education Committee of the Boone and Crockett Club.
