Procedure

Read How to Cite the References (Chapter 12 in Day, R.A. 1998. How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper. Oryx Press, Phoenix, AZ. 275 p.) and the "References section" in Instructions to authors: Canadian Journal of Forest Research, and then use the guidelines listed below to prepare the references section of your proposal.

In the text:

Use the "name and year system" for citing the literature in your proposal (Day 1998, Chapter 12). That is, list the (1) last name and year of publication for papers with a single author (i.e., Casey 2002), (2) last names and year of publication for papers with two authors (i.e., Casey and Jones 2003); and (3) last name of the senior author plus “et al.” for papers with three or more authors (i.e., Casey et al. 2004). That is, use the "et al." rule described by Day (1998, Chapter 12), except don't list all three names the first time a paper with three authors is cited—just use the "et al." rule for this citation as well. The “et al.” may be italicized. Do not use the "alphabet number system" or the "citation order system" (Day 1998, Chapter 12).

In the references section:

Your references section should follow one of the formats used in a primary peer-reviewed journal in your field. Although I included a link to formats used by the Canadian Journal of Forest Research (see above). You can use a different journal if you wish. Pick a journal that clearly describes how to format each type of citation you may encounter (e.g., journal articles, books, book chapters, proceedings, etc.), and please identify the journal that you used at the top of your references section. It’s important to use a consistent format (e.g., capitalization, punctuation, abbreviations, etc.), and do not pick a format that excludes the title of the reference. Some journals do this, but reviewers don’t like this!

As described in the Instructions to authors: Canadian Journal of Forest Research, "References must be listed in alphabetical order according to the name of the first author and not numbered. References with the same first author are listed in the following order: (i ) Papers with one author only are listed first in chronological order, beginning with the earliest paper. (ii ) Papers with dual authorship follow and are listed in alphabetical order by the last name of the second author. (iii ) Papers with three or more authors appear after the dual-authored papers and are arranged chronologically."

Journal abbreviations. Note, unlike this list of journal abbreviations, most forestry journals abbreviate "Forest" as "For.," which is also fine for your proposal.

Objectives and rationale

Upon completion of this assignment, you will have a references section that is formatted correctly for your final research proposal.
