Class participation (50 points)

Overview

You are expected to attend class, carefully read the assigned readings, actively participate in classroom discussions, engage in all classroom activities, and grade the participation of your classmates. We do not expect that you will always have the "right" answer, but we do expect you to openly express your ideas and engage your classmates in respectful discussion. That way, you can develop and refine your own ideas and learn from others. Grading class participation is often challenging. Your participation grade will be assigned by the instructors, but will be based on input from the students (see below).  Information on how to grade classroom participation can be found on the links web page. I borrowed heavily from these approaches to develop the grading scheme used in this class.

Procedure

You will will grade yourself and four other students twice during the term (see course schedule). For the list of students you will grade, click here. Note, you will grade a separate group of students each half-term. You should take notes at the end of each class period so you can assign a realistic and fair grade to each student. Use the participation grading form to assign your grades, and then submit the form to the course instructor on the assigned dates (see course schedule). The percentage grade you assign will be multiplied by the number of points available for this assignment to determine the number of points you recommend for the student (= [your grade in %]/100 x [points available]). The instructors will then use this score to help determine the final grade for each student.

The class participation grading you do will be evaluated as part of your class participation requirement.

Objectives and rationale

The objectives of class participation are to enhance the classes' (1) critical thinking skills, (2) oral communication skills, (3) and understanding of course readings and topics. You will grade your classmates to (1) reinforce your understanding of our expectations for class participation and (2) provide the instructors with the information needed to fairly grade student participation.
