Proposal format approval (0 points)
Overview
There is no universally
accepted format for research proposals—each proposal is written for
a particular audience and purpose. In most cases, a proposal is written
in
response to a specific 'request for proposals' (RFPs), and the overall format
is dictated by the funding organization. In this case, you should pay careful
attention to the granting agency’s format requirements. At Oregon State
University, there is no standardized format for graduate student proposals,
although some major professors and departments may have their own requirements.
In this class, we will use a fairly common 'default' format for our proposals
(see The Research
Proposal). This format is similar to those used by the USDA-CSREES National
Research Initiative Competitive Grants Program and the National Science
Foundation.
Nonetheless, if your major professor prefers a different format, that may
be acceptable as well.
Procedure
For this assignment, you will ask your major professor whether our default format is acceptable for your final research proposal. Regardless of which format you use for your final proposal, you must complete all of the assignments that deal with the individual elements of our default format. This will help you understand the range of formats that you may encounter (i.e., formats of proposals you may eventually write or review). Please have your major professor complete the format approval form to either confirm that our default format is acceptable, or suggest changes. Bring the signed form to class on or before the due date. If your major professor is out of town, you should get your major professor’s approval in an email to you, then bring a copy of the email to class in lieu of the format approval form. Keep a copy of your signed form so you can refer to it as you work on your proposal.
You should maintain close communication with your major professor as you develop your proposal. This is a great opportunity for stimulating discussions on your research!

If you do not complete the assignment by the due date, a late penalty will be assigned using the penalties listed in the late assignment policy.
