Course Overview

FS 520 Posing Researchable Questions, 1 credit, Sept. 28-Oct.16; Nov.30-Dec. 4
FS 599 Developing Research Questions, 2 credit, Oct.19-Nov. 27
8:30 am - 9:50 am, T/TH Peavy 272

The primary purpose of FS 520, along with FS599 in weeks 4-9 is to acquaint new graduate students in the natural resources to the scientific method and formation of good researchable questions. FS 520 consists of lectures, readings and discussions.  Students prepare and orally present (in the last week of class) a researchable question in their area of interest that is critiqued by the class and instructors.

FS 520 is intended to precede FS 521 (Natural Resources Research Planning; 2 credits) which is offered in the Winter Term. In FS 521 students learn how to take research questions through to preparation of formal research proposals. Both FS 520 and FS 521 are core (required) courses in the Forest Science curriculum and are suitable, as well, for other graduate students in natural resource sciences.
