The influence of timber harvest on songbirds

Your paper on this topic should address influences of different intensities of timber harvest (e.g., clearcutting, thinning) on songbird populations.  There are a number of different directions you could go with this paper, including consideration of influences on abundance of birds, nesting habitat, foraging, and/or reproductive success, however, given the limitations on length of the paper it will not be possible to cover all of these topics well.  As a result, you will need to define the scope of your paper carefully (what aspects and geographical area you are considering), and let the reader know up front what that scope is.

Your paper should cite the following papers and a minimum of 5 others:

Chambers, C. L., W. C. McComb, and J. Tappeiner, II.  1999.  Breeding bird community responses to three silvicultural treatments in the Oregon Coast Range.  Ecological Applications 9:171-185.

Hansen, A. J., W. C. McComb, R. Vega, M. G. Raphael, and M. Hunter.  1995.  Bird habitat relationships in natural and managed forests in the west Cascades of Oregon.  Ecological Applications 5:555-569.

Hayes, J. P., J. M. Weikel, and M. M. P. Huso.  In press.  Response of birds to thinning young Douglas-fir forests.  Ecological Applications.  (Note: This article does not yet appear in the journal.  The final pre-publication draft is on file at the Forestry Self Learning Center, the library at Nash Hall, and the Valley Library).
