Homework 1

OSU WebMail and Course Introduction

*** This 10-point assignment is due by Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 9:00pm.
Allow enough time for the instructor to reply in Task 2 below!!

1. (2 pts) Send an e-mail to the instructor that answers the following questions: What are your goals for the course and what is your experience with the topics to be covered this term? For the e-mail subject line, use HW1-Q1.

2. (2 pts) The instructor will reply to your HW1-Q1 e-mail and attach a word document.

• Save the attached file to your ONID file space (Z: drive) and open the file.
• Add your name to the beginning of the document and save your changes.
• Look in your Sent-Mail folder and forward your original message that you sent in the first task of this homework assignment back to the instructor and include (attach) your modified Word document.
• For the e-mail subject line, use HW1-Q2.

3. (2 pts) Search Google for your name (first and last name; constructed as a phrase). When Google returns the results of your search, capture a screen shot of that window and use Irfanview or some other graphics program to save it as a .jpg file, named week1google.jpg. E-mail the .jpg file as an attachment to the instructor with the subject line HW1-Q3.

4. (2 pts) If you're completing this step from off-campus, then establish a VPN connection to the OSU network (https://sds.oregonstate.edu) before you tackle the steps below. If you're on campus, just complete the three steps.

• Open a window to view the files in your ONID file space (Go to Start |Run and type in
  \\onid-fs.onid.oregonstate.edu\your_ONID_username). Be sure that the Question 2 Word document and Question 3 .jpg image are listed in the window.
• Use Ctrl-PrintScreen to capture the entire screen showing your ONID file space (and if you're completing this step from off-campus, the VPN connection icon in the System Tray on your Desktop).
• Save this screen shot as a .jpg file (name of your choosing) in your ONID file space. E-mail this .jpg file as an attachment to the instructor with the subject line HW1-Q4.

5. (2 pts) Turn in your FOR 112 Computing Survey sheet to the instructor no later than our first Friday class.
