Graduate Student Programs

If your interest lies in the area of forest-related natural resources and their management, use, conservation, and protection, there's no better place for graduate study than the College of Forestry at Oregon State University. OSU's College of Forestry enjoys a century-long reputation as a leader in forestry research and teaching. Oregon State University is home to one of the largest communities of forestry and forest-products scientists in the world. We are located in one of North America's prime forestry regions, with large federal land holdings, a strong forest industry base, and links with the Pacific rim and other international sectors. Our graduate teaching is strongly integrated with research; College faculty members serve as instructors and mentors to students. Degree programs are carefully integrated, with coursework offered throughout the OSU campus. Because of the University's wealth of scientific and technical programs, students in the College of Forestry enjoy a breadth of course offerings and the opportunity to interact with colleagues in many related disciplines. Forestry graduate students enjoy a strong and supportive peer community. A wide range of cultures, interests, and perspectives exists here in an atmosphere of respect and mutual support. Currently the College has about 170 graduate students, including about 70 international students from over 25 countries. About 75 forestry faculty members teach at the graduate level.

Graduate programs leading to the Master of Forestry (M.F.), Master of Science (M.S.), or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees are offered in four departments of the College of Forestry. The Department of Forest Engineering offers study in forest hydrology, timber harvest systems, logging engineering, forest operations, and a joint program in harvesting and silviculture with the Department of Forest Science. The Department of Wood Science and Engineering offers concentrations in wood science, pulp and paper technology, computer-aided wood processing, timber engineering, biodeterioration and wood preservation, materials science/wood composites, and forest products marketing. The Department of Forest Resources includes study in community and resource development, forest biometrics/modeling, forest economics, forest management, forest planning administration, forest social science, forest recreation, land use planning, policy, natural resource education and extension, remote sensing, and GIS. The Department of Forest Science offers concentrations in forest ecology, forest genetics, integrated forest protection, forest physiology, and silviculture and is also the home department for the Sustainable Natural Resources graduate certificate program.

Consult departments for specific graduate concentrations. We would be glad to hear from you if you would like more information about our College.
