Oak Woodland

This is an oak woodland near Corvallis, Oregon. Nestled next to the "Western Hemlock Zone", only active removal of conifer trees, through harvest or fire, will keep this woodland from converting to Douglas-fir and western hemlock.

Historically fire was used by local native Americans to maintain the oak woodlands. Oak acorns were a food source, as were the deer and elk that ate the acorns and the grass beneath the trees.
