is an oak woodland near Corvallis, Oregon. Nestled
next to the "Western Hemlock Zone", only
active removal of conifer trees, through harvest
or fire, will keep this woodland from converting
to Douglas-fir and western hemlock.
fire was used by local native Americans to maintain
the oak woodlands. Oak acorns were a food source,
as were the deer and elk that ate the acorns and
the grass beneath the trees.
