Master of Forestry

The Master of Forestry is earned in either silviculture or forest biology and is a professional rather than research-oriented degree. The M.F. in Silviculture is jointly administered with the Department of Forest Resources and is accredited by The Society of American Foresters. The M.F. in Forest Biology is intended for forestry practitioners who wish more expertise in a specific area of forest biology.

Master of Science

The M.S. in Forest Science emphasizes strong research specialization, along with an understanding and appreciation of broad issues and applied problems of forest science. The thesis and associated research allow the student to develop in-depth knowledge of specific technical areas and to gain experience in planning, conducting, and reporting on an original study.

Doctor of Philosophy

The Doctoral program is intended for persons seeking careers in teaching and research. A Ph.D. in Forest Science generally requires four years of graduate-level coursework and research that demonstrates originality and the probability of advancing science. The thesis and associated research play a dual role by enabling the student to develop in-depth knowledge of specific technical areas, while at the same time gaining experience in conceptualizing, planning, conducting, and reporting a major research project.

The Ph.D. in Silviculture and Harvesting is jointly administered with the Department of Forest Engineering. Students who obtain this degree will have expertise in both growing and harvesting trees, and should be competent to teach these subjects at the university level.

Dual Majors

In some cases, students will best be served by seeking a dual major. This is one degree, but with two transcript-visible majors. Students in this program may pursue MS or PhD dual majors from the Department of Forest Science and Wood Science and Engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, statistics or with other fields. Students must be accepted by OSU and by both departments offering the majors. The degree requirements for both majors must be satisfied, but only one graduate committee and one thesis or dissertation are necessary. Dual major PhD programs are highly customized but follow the same pattern of organization and division of credits as dual major MS programs.

Multidisciplinary Programs

The Department of Forest Science also is active in several multidisciplinary graduate programs.
