Undergraduate Programs

The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree programs provide strong general education oriented toward the management of forests, wildlands, and related natural resources.

  • Forest Management
The B.S. in Forest Management (FM) is a broad-based education with the goal of preparing students to be successful forest managers. Students select an option which increases their expertise in a specific discipline; such as, Silviculture, Wildland Fire Management, Ecosystem Science or International Forestry. Graduates must understand biological and physical processes occurring in forests, the social and economic forces that influence policies and actions affecting forests, natural resource systems, and management of forest resources for multiple uses. Students also learn how values affect forest planning so they can communicate effectively with others and make relevant decisions.

Forest management graduates are employed by private organizations, such as the forest products industry, forestry consulting firms, environmental organizations, or are self-employed. Others are employed by federal, state, and local government agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, Peace Corps, and state parks and forests.

  • Recreation Resource Management
The B.S. in Recreation Resource Management (RRM) prepares students to be managers, planners, and interpreters to meet the challenges of providing quality recreation opportunities while maintaining the ecological integrity of natural resources. The SAF-accredited curriculum provides a solid mix of physical and social sciences, resource management (including wildlife, range, and forestry), and quantitative methods. Students increase their expertise by pursuing a specialty area from a wide range of disciplines, including business administration, cultural resource management, environmental interpretation, fisheries and wildlife, law enforcement, public administration, and resource planning, or they work with their advisor to develop an individualized option. Students get field experience working for a public agency or private employer in a management capacity.

Recreation Resource Management graduates are employed by all of the federal land management agencies, by state, county, and local parks, and by recreation providers in the private sector.

  • Natural Resources
The B.S. in Natural Resources is offered jointly by the College of Forestry and three other colleges on campus: Agricultural Sciences, Liberal Arts, and Science. It provides a broad-based exposure to topics surrounding land, water, forests, fauna, and their interaction with human cultures.

Natural Resources graduates, through selection of a specialty option, are well prepared for careers in a variety of natural resource fields. This degree also prepares them to be well-informed citizens who are cognizant of the broad issues surrounding natural resources.

  • International Studies in Forestry
This baccalaureate degree is obtainable only in conjunction with another undergraduate degree offered by the University. For example, a student could earn both a B.S. in Forest Management and a concurrent Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in International Studies in Forestry.
  • Interdisciplinary Studies
Interdisciplinary programs depend fundamentally upon the existence of strong disciplinary programs and place significant responsibility upon students to integrate and synthesize information. It is crucial that students obtain guidance in order to understand the advantages and limitations of particular disciplinary and interdisciplinary alternatives. See the Interdisciplinary Studies section of the General Catalog for curriculum details.

  • Tourism and Outdoor Leadership
The Department sponsors a B.S. degree in Tourism and Outdoor Leadership at the OSU Cascades Campus in Bend, Oregon. This program educates students to work in a variety of tourism and commercial recreation fields ranging from nature/adventure outfitting to resort management. Specialized options are available in Tourism and Commercial Recreation Management, Outdoor and Experiential Education, and International Ecotourism. Additional information can be obtained by accessing the website at: www.osucascades.edu/orlt or contacting the Cascades Campus Admissions Office at 541/322-3100.
