Although it is a broadleaved tree, Pacific madrone is evergreen. Its thick, leathery leaves persist on the tree for two years, These leaves are 2-5 inches in long, and are oval in shape. Their upper surface is dark glossy green, while the under surface is pale green to white in color. Each summer the tree produces new leaves, and the leaves from the previous year die. The dead leaves turn bright red and remain on the tree in bunches until the following summer when they are shed.
