On healthy mature trees, the leaves as well as the leafstalk or petiole may be as long as a foot. On young trees, the leaves do not grow to such huge dimensions, but are still easily distinguishable by the five deeply cut lobes that characterize each leaf. In fall, the soft, yellow-orange tone of the tree's leaves brings a beautiful change to the frequently coniferous landscape.
