Perhaps the
second best well known tree in the northwest next to Douglas-fir, bigleaf
maple grows extensively in much of the region. Its range stretches along
the Pacific coast from just south of the Alaska panhandle to California
where it grows in the coastal and Sierra Nevada mountains. Although it will
grow on either dry or moist sites, bigleaf maple is most frequently found
on disturbed sites such as those affected by fire or logging.
