Course Description

A broad overview of forests, forestry, forest engineering and wood science and engineering. This course is designed for all students interested in forest resources and human uses of those resources. It provides an overview of forest attributes and issues world wide, with strong emphasis on the United States and especially Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. We emphasize the importance of forests in sustaining human societies, and we consider the appropriate roles of humans in managing and conserving forests for the numerous products, values, and amenities they provide.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the importance of forests and wood products for our societies.
  2. Know the basics of forest biology and ecology.
  3. Know the main principles and practices of measuring, evaluating, managing and manipulating forest resources for human uses and values.
  4. Know basic wood properties and the many products derived from wood.
  5. Understand the economic significance of forest resources and economic and social forces affecting manufacturing, markets, use, and allocation.
  6. Grasp contemporary issues in forestry, both domestically and internationally.
  7. Know basic terms, concepts, and principles of forest science, forest management, forest engineering, forest recreation, and forest products; be able to articulate them clearly and concisely.
