We welcome Dr. Thomas Maness as
the new Department Head for Forest Engineering Resources and Management,
beginning October 1, 2009.
Dr. Maness comes to us from the University
of British Columbia where he created and directed the BC Forum
on Forest Economics and Policy, a research and extension center
aimed at helping to develop a strategic vision for the future
competitiveness of the BC forest sector. He was also responsible
for the creation of UBC’s Centre for Advanced Wood Processing
and he served as its Director for 5 years, leading the faculty
in developing a new award winning undergraduate program in value-added
wood processing. Dr. Maness has been a successful teacher and
researcher with an extensive list of published works. His research
has spanned three broad categories: (i) strategic land-use planning
and forest tenure policy, (ii) value chain optimization and (iii)
energy and climate policy. In addition to his academic accomplishments,
Dr. Maness has forestry industry experience in the Pacific Northwest
as a project engineer and software developer.
