McDonnell is outgoing President of the International
Commission on Tracers (ICT). This commission is the body within
Association of Hydrological Sciences that is responsible for promoting
the use of tracers in hydrology.
It co-operates with the other Commissions
of the IAHS in
bringing expertise concerning tracers into the hydrological studies
and research, in order to contribute to adequate management and development
of water resources in an environmentally sustainable way.
ICT also emphasizes the transfer of theoretical
knowledge of tracers to application in the field. Once this transfer takes
place, the knowledge gained from fundamental scientific tracer studies
can be used in the day to day management of water resources.
In relation to ICT, Prof. McDonnell helped
define the new Joint International Isotope Hydrology Program (JIIIP). He
