INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

An important product of the forest engineering conference will be the conference proceedings.

The deadline for submission of papers in 1 August, 2002. We want to publish the proceedings as soon as possible after the conference.

What follows are guidelines to help you with the preparation of your paper. We will be reformatting your papers for consistency, however, your following these guidelines will help us immensely. If you have problems meeting these guidelines, please contact us so we can make other arrangements.

Submittal

All papers must be submitted no later than 1, August, 2002 and preferably submitted at the time of the conference: 3, July 2002

Electronic Formats

  1. Submit your paper thought email to ben.spong@orst.edu or loren.kellogg@orst.edu

  1. Also, bring a diskette as well as two hardcopies of your paper to the Woodfor Africa conference. Submit to either Ben Spong or Loren Kellogg.

Submit as a .DOC, RTF, or ASCII text file in PC format, preferably in Microsoft Word on a 3.5-inch diskette. Please no Word Perfect or other file formats. Formatting will be verified against your hard copy, which should accompany the electronic version. Please send all Figures and Tables on CD or diskette, preferably as separate files in the form (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) that they were originally created in.

Typing

The manuscript should be typed on either 8 ½ x 11 inch or A4 paper (one side only). All margins (top, bottom, sides) should be 1 inch (2.5 cm) double space between all lines, except between headings and paragraphs (separate with one empty line).

Technical content is the responsibility of the author(s). It is the author’s responsibility that the content, grammar and style are correct in the submitted paper. An editor will be available for some minor review of grammar. However, it will not be possible because of time constraints to have paper’s returned to authors following the reformatting for proofreading and/or approval.

Format

Your paper should be no longer than 20 pages (double spaced) excluding table, figures, and references. It should be structured as follows (the parts in bold font are obligatory):

Title of the paper

Name and affiliation of the author(s)

Abstract (approximately 100 words, limit to 300 words)

Keywords (3-5)

Text with inserted figures/tables

Acknowledgements

References

Appendices

Title

Titles should properly reflect the contents of the paper and not exceed approximately 15 words in length.

Author

The author(s)’s name is immediately under the title. The author(s)’s name, title, and address follow the last reference at the end of the paper.

Abstract

The paper should start with a short summary (100-300 words) of the contents of the paper. Three to five keywords should be included.

Page Numbering

Please number your pages to assist the editor. Page numbers can be placed at the top or bottom of each page.

Units

Use customary units for the field.

Text

Do not make a separate title page. Use 12-pitch Times New Roman or similar font. The text should be double-spaced through the manuscript. Separate paragraphs with one empty line – do not indent the first line of a new paragraph.

The text should be written in standard journal format. Complex sentences and excessive use of jargon are prime offenders in detracting readability. Text material should be well organized and presented in a logical manner. The appropriate use of subheadings, especially in long sections, will usually enhance the overall quality of a manuscript.

Please do not use footnotes unless it is absolutely necessary. In most cases the information can be incorporated in the normal text.

Headings

Three grades of heading should be sufficient, typed as follows:

a.  First Grade. Capitals and centered.

FIRST-GRADE HEADING

b.  Second Grade. Center, capitalizing first letter of each word

Second-Grade Heading

c. Third Grade. Type flush left with the first letter of each word capitalized.

Third-Grade Heading

d. Fourth Grade (if needed). Type flush left with the first letter of each word capitalized, and underscore.

Fourth-Grade Heading

Citations in the text

Please make sure that details of all references cited in the text are included in the list of references. Citations in the text should be of the form: (Author(s) 19xx) in parentheses. References cited should come immediately at the end of the text. Only cite literature used in the References (Literature Cited) section of the paper. The format is as follows:

Author(s) last name(s), first name(s). Date. Title. Publication source. Page(s) reference.

Figures and Tables

When designing your figures and tables, keep the size and the layout of the proceedings in mind.

Table headings should be numbered and titled at the top of the table. Figures should be numbered and titled below the figures. Each table and figure must be mentioned in the text.

Tables and figures may be embedded in the text or placed at the end of the manuscript. Please mark clearly where to place the Figures and Tables in the text. If only a paper copy of a figure is submitted, it should be of a quality high enough for printing, otherwise it cannot be included. Figure captions need to be typed or identified on back of figure.

Photos may be submitted electronically, or in color or black and white glossy prints. Prints will be scanned. Electronic photos should be submitted as JPEG images of high resolution. If resolution is insufficient for print purposes, a hard copy may be requested for scanning.

Line drawings and photos can be of any reasonable size. They should be protected from bending during mailing with cardboard or other means. All line drawings and photos should be marked lightly on the back with figure number, author’s surname, and the first few words of title.

References (Literature Cited)

Please try to follow this style for references and be as consistent as possible when listing the references.

Order references alphabetically by the first author and then by date.

Author, A., 1995. Title of the publication. Publishing company, City. Xx p.

Author, B., 1995a. Title of the article. Journal of the article. Vol.:p-pp.

Author, B., 1995b. Title of the article. In: Author, X. and Author, Y. (eds.).

Title of the scientific publication. Pp. x-xx.

FAO, 1995. Name of the publication. Pp. xx.

Note:

  1. No italics are used in the reference list.
  2. The titles of journals or other publications should always be written in full and not abbreviated.
  3. Do not use capital letters in the titles of publications.
  4. References for Internet sites: Author, Date, Title of site. Publisher with town and country (where possible), URL. Inclusion of publisher with town and country makes the citation more durable, as finding the reference does not depend entirely on the URL remaining correct.

Appendix

We discourage the use of appendices, but if necessary for you to use them, they should be labeled Appendix A, Appendix B, etc.

Acknowledgements

These should be placed under an appropriate heading between the end of the text and the references (Literature Cited).

We reserve the right to reject papers that do not follow the instructions presented above.
