JOB DESCRIPTION:

Commercial Thinning Skyline Logging Technician. Perform all phases of designing, analyzing, and safely implementing commercial thinning with the Koller K300 yarder. Work typically includes:

• running profiles and performing payload analysis
• chainsaw operation, timber felling and bucking
• cable system rigging and chokersetting
• yarding, sorting, and decking of logs
• log quality control
• equipment operation and maintenance
• other tasks as assigned

This job is a great opportunity to be exposed to all phases of a logging operation while providing for application of skills learned in the classroom. The work program is designed as a logging training program for interested and qualified students. There will also be opportunities to assist with harvest operations projects and research outside of the student thinning operation.

Successful applicants will be required to make a one (1) year commitment (1 Jan to 31 Dec). Expectation to work 12 - 20 hours per week during the school year (as class schedules permit) and full time during the summer.

LOCATION:

The McDonald/Dunn College Forest. This position may include opportunities to travel to and work on satellite College Forest tracts. Transportation is usually provided from the Harvest Systems lab (College Forest office complex). Students may be required to provide their own transportation to local work sites.

DURATION:

Training (office & field) takes place during Winter and Spring terms, tentatively 4 hours per week. Part time work is expected (12 – 20 hours per week) during the school year. Full time work is expected during the summer field season (approx. mid June – end of September).

COMPENSATION:

$ 9.00 - $10.00 per hour, commensurate with qualifications.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

Physical and mental capacities for working safely on rugged terrain and in adverse weather conditions. Ability to safely work and communicate well with other logging personnel, land managers, and supervisors “ CAN DO ” attitude! TEAM worker. Neat writing skills, keyboarding skills, computer use skills. Calk boots, hardhat, rain gear, and Leatherman (or similar) tool. Cruisers vest by summer season.

PREFERRED:

Completion of the sophomore year in Forest Engineering or Forest Management; specifically course work in surveying, mensuration, silviculture, harvest processes, logging management, and forest operations analysis. Prior logging experience is not required.
