As another archaeobotanist working intensively with wood remains, 
carbonized and otherwise, I recommend the IAWA softwood list (see 
below). As one of the committee members who worked to develop that list, 
I would point out that we made an effort to include concerns with 
archaeological and paleontological wood in the list.  You can use most 
of the characters in the list with no problem and you might find some of 
the references such as Phillips' articles helpful.
