The paper by Matsunaga et al in the latest issue of IAWA Journal (Vol. 29,2008 p. 387-396) illustrates a phenomenon often observed, for which I have not found an explanation. It is very obvious from their micrographs that the copper carbonate and iron oxide nanoparticles accumulate on the pit borders. I have observed that bacteria, tiny air bubbles, tiny creosote particles and iron containing particles observed in waterlogged archaeological wood also accumulate on the pit borders. Air bubbles may sometimes give an illusion of pit border degradation. Grateful for any explanations.
