Dear colleagues, this is an announcement for all of you interested in a portable, easy to use microtome especially designed for cutting micro sections for wood anatomical analysis. Like many others we had a hard time looking for cost effective microtomes to set up our lab and did not find affordable and functional solutions. As a consequence we started developing a new microtome in collaboration with a precision mechanic in Zuerich, Switzerland. As a result, we are now able to offer a new, cost effective and lightweight microtome (GSL1) operated with disposable blades. There is no need for special microtome knifes and respective sharpening procedures. The microtome can be used in the lab as well as in the field or at any place you need it. Because of its sophisticated design (dimensions 300 x 130 x 133 mm; weight: 3,5 kg) you can even transport it in your bag pack. The GSL1 microtome passed tests using wood samples of varying densities (incl. tropical wood species). The most important successful test was the first time application of the GSL1 microtomes at the 2nd International Summer School on Wood Anatomy of Tree Rings 2007, Tucson, Arizona. Since then we have been using them successfully as standard equipment for our courses and in our lab.
