Dear all, I am a French PhD student in paleobotany. I am currently studying Carboniferous woods and I have encontered strange dark inclusions in the ray cells of some of them. These inclusions are of variable shape, often circular but sometimes elongated or square. Their size is around 30µm. The remarkable thing is that they are surrounded by a clear zone bounded by a thin layer. (I can send some photos). I have found a reference of the same type of inclusion occurring in a Devonian wood (Stubblefield et al., 1985) but the authors didn’t elucidate their true nature. They ruled out fungi spores because of the various shapes and sizes. Could it be crystal? or resin (there's no resin canal in the rays of these woods)? Is it something that occurs in extant woods? Do you have some references on this or know somebody who may help me?
