Thomas,

Tension wood occurs in stems as well as branches.  I do not know the =
time period when your ship was built, but the natural bend in trees was =
used to reduce manufacturing effort, particularly before the industrial =
revolution.  The arched stems (where the tension wood occurs) was cut so =
that the bow was used where a curved beam was needed.
