[This is the message Rod sent on Sept. 1 that didn't make it to the IAWA Forum--because it doesn't accept photos or attachments in case they carry viruses! -- Barb Gartner] Pieter has made me feel disrespectful to a group for whom I have great respect. You deserve to at least see what I was referring to, so here's a sample, with two-year-old cambium from this perennial in cross section. I expect some of you will know it (no, it's not beetroot, just stained with tol blue)! 8be5d53f.jpg You can see a couple of new 'vessels' in the cambial zone and some within the radial files of 'xylem'. The cluster of vessels near the cz is misleading in that such groups are scarce. Rays are very rare and where present are multiseriate parenchyma. Note the 'phloem'; I haven't been able to confirm any sieve cells with certainty.
