I've heard about people shaving down the wood to see the needle traces, and to surmise how many cohorts of needles are attached, and I think this reference might be about that:

Pouttu, A. and M. Dobbertin (2000). Needle-retention and density patterns in Pinus sylvestris in the Rhona Valley of Switzerland: comparing results of the needle-trace method with visual defoliation assessments. Canadian Journal of Forest Research 30: 1973-?.

I have another reference that I can't put my fingers on, but they probably cite it.
