Dear Colleagues I am studying a defect in radiata pine wood which we call needle fleck. It is initiated by persistent stem needles causing very small (1-2mm) knot-like structures in a spiral pattern on tangential surfaces. In some cases these defects are much larger and contain a bark inclusion. This defect often persists long after the needles are lost and causes significant degrade to clearwood for high value products. It also creates a nice figure that wood turners make use of. It may be associated with bird's eye (indented growth rings). I cannot find any mention of this defect in the text books I have looked at so far. I am interested to know if anyone has seen this in other pine species or if there are any publications that describe it.
