Hi Jenny

At that sort of density you will have a major problem sectioning with any
sort of tool. In my experience disposable knives (Feather brand) will work
on softened material upto about 7-800 kg m3. In your case you might try to
investigate the use of milling devices to prepare the sample. CSIRO use a
diamond mill to prepare cores for silviscan which might work on your
material. I suggest you contact Geoff Downes or Jugo Ilic. You could also
consider ion beam milling - contact Prof. Mel Dickson at University of NSW.
M.Dickson@unsw.edu.au You could also contact Jim Darvey at Proscitech in
Brisbane - they sell a range of disposable knives and might be able to
suggest something.

Depending on how much you can soften the sample it may be a case of getting
a smooth surface for SEM rather than actually sectioning.
Good luck !

Dear list-members

Can anyone out there recommend a brand of disposable microtome knives
suitable for a sledge microtome and for sectioning (softened) wood with a
density up to 1400 kg/m3 (86lbs/ft3)?

Many thanks in advance.
