Dear David and fellow list serve members,

There is an auger (drill bit) developed by CSIRO available through J. Blackwood & Son Limited in Sydney. They have developed bits for softwoods and hardwoods. Basically, it is a hollow bit that drills the wood around a a 12 mm dia. core, leaving a 25 mm hole in the tree. You can attach the bit to a gas-powered drill via an adapter that you purchase from the company.
My experience has been that this tool works very well, but that the cores come out of the trees basically boiling... such that most of the living cells are killed in the process.

Contact Info for the company:

Good Luck,

All,

I find this topic of particular interest, and greatly
appreciate Henri's tips and look forward to his
upcoming article.

However, I have been wondering from my own research
sampling Prosopis pallida on the Peruvian North Coast
if there is recommended electric or gas powered
alternative to hand coring in the field. I have been
extremely unsuccessful in coring these trees with
standard increment borers.

Any comments are appreciated.

David Goldstein
