Candace:
	In many trees the outer wood is under tension, while the inner
wood is under compression. This could account for the borer getting stuck
once the fibers are cut.
	Some time in the dim past I have used a steel tube with saw teeth
welded at the end to remove large cores from trees for pulping studies. If
the teeth are set properly it could possibly made to work under your
conditions. We turned the tube with a 1-inch electric drill.
