Hi Mel,

We have recently reviewed the literature on intercellular spaces in rays, and with one 
exception they are small and in corners, and I agree with you would not likely transport 
water radially.  The reason we reviewed the literature on this subject was because we 
found large intercellular spaces between ray cells in Glyptostrobus and are proposing 
that this is one of several  taxonomic characters to use to separate Metasequoia and 
Glyptostrobus (paper submitted to IAWA).  I could send you photos if you like.
