Postdoctoral Position Available on the effects of tree size and ageing =
on tree physiological ecology
A postdoctoral position is available at the School of Earth, =
Environmental and Geographical Sciences (University of Edinburgh, UK). =
We are looking for a person with a PhD in Biology, Ecology, Forest =
Science or related disciplines. The successful applicant will take part =
in field work, greenhouse and growth chamber experiments, data analysis, =
and report writing for studies of the effects of tree age and size on =
tree carbon and water balance.
Our objective is to understand why forest trees have declining growth =
rates as their size and age increases. We will decouple age from size by =
using grafted material taken from trees of variable age from the field. =
We will also investigate water use and gross primary productivity of the =
same trees in the field by using branch bags, whole-tree sap flow and =
stable isotope approaches. Finally, field manipulations will take place =
to disentangle the role of xylem water transport.
Candidates need not be experienced in all the techniques (branch bags, =
sap flow sensors, hydraulic conductivity and embolism measurements, =
stable isotopes, etc.) that we currently use. The candidate will join a =
group composed of five PhD students, two postdoctoral associates and one =
technician, whose focus is on the understanding of the physiological =
ecology of forest trees and forest ecosystems. The group itself is part =
of the larger EUBAP (Edinburgh University Biosphere-Atmosphere =
Programme), which includes five more groups working on environmental =
biology, soil science, micrometeorology, ecological modelling and global =
carbon balance.
Fieldwork will take place in Caledonian Scots pine forests located in =
Central and Southern Scotland.
To apply, please send a cover letter describing your interest in the =
position with a copy of your CV and the names and contact information of =
two referees.
