Salvage Harvest
While surveying the timber downed in the January ice storm, we found about
12 acres of downed timber on the North-facing slope of the “Little
Grand Canyon” (the draw that divides the Cameron Forest in two). It
looks as if the soils on the slope just couldn’t hold the trees upright
once they were coated with ice and snow. On much of this 12 acres, all of
the trees were downed; elsewhere at least 50% were down.
We designed the harvest to salvage some of the commercially-valuable timber
in this area, while retaining legacy, wildlife, and other special value trees.
In order to minimize disturbance of the fragile soils on the slope, we’ll
be utilizing a portable high lead system. Yarding should be completed by
the beginning of September.
About 25 folks turned out for the salvage harvest demonstration field day
in August. Most of the unit had been harvested, but the yarder was down for
repairs. We discussed harvest design, owl nest protection considerations,
timber markets, and roading. Debbie Johnson and Rich Simons from the College
Forests staff, Rick Fletcher from OSU Forestry Extension, and John Bliss
from OSU Forest Resources made brief presentations. The most popular presentation
was the watermelon provided by OSWA!
